HP Series 5 Pro 514PN: A Premium Portable Monitor with a High Price Tag

HP’s Series 5 Pro 514PN is among the first portable monitors to feature “Neo:LED” technology, which is essentially LG’s IPS Black panel with a mini-LED backlight. While the underlying tech isn’t new, the 14-inch display stands out in a crowded market due to its high contrast, wide color gamut, and sleek design. However, at $299, it’s notably more expensive than most portable monitors, positioning it firmly within the premium segment.

Key Features and Performance

The HP 514PN boasts several advantages over standard portable displays. Neo:LED consumes less power, making it ideal for use with laptops or devices running on battery. The monitor’s design includes an integrated kickstand for both vertical and horizontal orientations, along with strategically placed USB-C ports for video input. Its 9mm thickness and 1.4-pound weight place it squarely in the middle of the size range for portable monitors.

Color accuracy is solid but not perfect. The monitor covers 100% of both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, although factory calibration is lacking, resulting in color inaccuracies at the edges of these spaces. Contrast ratios reach around 1,450:1, an improvement over traditional IPS panels, though not as high as OLED displays. Brightness peaks at 427 nits, exceeding the rated 400 nits, suggesting built-in headroom for long-term backlight degradation.

Gaming and Usage Considerations

The 514PN’s 75Hz refresh rate is adequate for casual gaming, but it lacks variable refresh rate support, meaning it’s locked to 60Hz for most titles. While it can function well with handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck, those expecting high-speed responsiveness will be disappointed. The vivid colors and high contrast do enhance the gaming experience, but those accustomed to OLED screens may find the difference noticeable.

The monitor also includes software for Windows (and eventually Mac) that allows adjustment of brightness, color presets, and rotation settings. The software offers features such as video level control and response time adjustments, though most users won’t need the latter.

Price and Value

The biggest barrier to entry for the HP 514PN is its price. At $299, it is significantly more expensive than many competitors in the portable monitor market. This high cost suggests HP is targeting commercial buyers or users willing to pay a premium for the advanced features.

Ultimately, the HP 514PN delivers a superior portable display experience, but its high price may not justify the cost for all users. The higher contrast and power efficiency could be worthwhile for those who spend long hours in front of a screen, but for casual users, cheaper alternatives may suffice.
