New reports suggest Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone will not arrive until December 2026, several months after the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Analyst Tim Long, from Barclays, made the claim in a recent research note, marking the first concrete timeline shift for the device.
Delayed Launch Strategy
While an announcement in September remains possible, Long’s analysis indicates actual shipments of the iPhone Fold won’t begin until later in the year. This mirrors Apple’s previous release strategy with the iPhone X, where the device was unveiled in September but only became available to consumers months later.
iPhone 18 Lineup Changes
The report also details shifts in Apple’s broader iPhone 18 strategy. The base iPhone 18 model is now predicted for a March 2027 release, effectively skipping a 2026 launch entirely. Alongside it, Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18e, as well as a potential revival of the “Plus” model – replacing the current iPhone Air which is rumored to have disappointing sales.
The iPhone Air Model
Apple discontinued the “Plus” model in 2025, instead opting for the slimmer iPhone Air. The suggestion that Apple might revert to a “Plus” variant raises questions about the Air’s market performance. If sales have been weak, Apple could be reassessing its model lineup to better cater to consumer demand.
This latest timeline confirms that Apple is prioritizing a staggered release, starting with its flagship Pro models before introducing the Fold and base iPhone 18. The decision likely reflects Apple’s focus on maximizing market impact through carefully timed product launches, rather than overwhelming the consumer base with simultaneous releases.
The delayed release of the iPhone Fold could indicate technical challenges, supply chain concerns, or a deliberate strategy to build anticipation before launching a high-profile, innovative device. Ultimately, the market will determine whether this approach pays off.
