The New York Times’ Wordle puzzle for January 3, 2024 (#1659) has been solved. The answer is SITAR.
The puzzle’s difficulty stemmed from its uncommon vocabulary—a long-necked Indian lute—and the requirement to deduce a word with two vowels, beginning with ‘S’ and ending with ‘R’ while containing no repeated letters.

The Future of Wordle ’s Word List
The game’s long-term sustainability is under discussion. Wordle editor Tracy Bennett has acknowledged that the current word list, drawn from a finite selection of five-letter words, will eventually be depleted.
To address this, the editorial team is considering options such as recycling previously used words, allowing plurals or past tense variations (currently excluded), or expanding to six-letter words. More than half of the original 2,000+ words have already been used in the game. The longevity of Wordle depends on whether its developers will adapt to these constraints.
