Young scouts are earning more than just knots tied, fires built, and first aid skills. The organization Scouts America has introduced two new merit badges focused on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, ensuring that this century-old group stays relevant in the modern technological era.
A Modern Update for a Timeless Tradition
Scouts America, formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America, has always been at the forefront of youth development. In 2019, the organization rebranded to Scouts BSA and opened its doors to girls, allowing participation in all-girl troops. More recently, in February, it adopted the name Scouting America to better reflect its inclusive mission.
The addition of these new badges marks another significant step into the digital age. “Both badges focus on real-world practice, not just reading about technology,” said a statement from Scouts America. “The AI badge gets Scouts thinking about how to use technology responsibly. The cybersecurity badge teaches actual security skills along with safe online habits.”
What Scouts Will Learn
According to the organization’s website, the AI merit badge “will introduce scouts to the fundamentals of AI and automation through hands-on activities and real-world examples.” Meanwhile, the cybersecurity merit badge “equips Scouts with essential knowledge and skills to navigate and protect the digital world.”
These new badges join more than 130 existing merit badges covering a wide range of subjects. While many traditional merit badges focus on outdoor skills and hands-on experiences, these technological additions are designed to prepare young people for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Embracing Technology Beyond the Classroom
Scouts America isn’t stopping at just adding new badges. The organization has also developed an AI chatbot named Scoutly that can help Scouts learn about badge requirements and other information. This tool demonstrates the organization’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the scouting experience.
As one of the largest youth organizations in the United States with over 1 million youth members (including nearly 200,000 female participants), Scouts America has a significant impact on young people’s lives. By incorporating AI and cybersecurity into its curriculum, the organization is equipping young people with vital skills for the future.
These developments represent more than just updating an old organization. They signal a thoughtful adaptation to the rapidly evolving technological landscape, ensuring that scouting remains a valuable educational experience for young people today and in the future
