Tesla Adds Seven-Seat Option to Model Y in the U.S.

Tesla now offers a seven-seat configuration for the Model Y in the United States, adding a third row of seats as a $2,500 upgrade for Premium and Performance trims. However, this differs from the larger, more spacious six-seater Model Y L available in China.

The U.S. version squeezes the additional seats into the existing trunk space, making them primarily suitable for small children rather than adults. This contrasts sharply with the Chinese Model Y L, which boasts a longer wheelbase and provides genuine legroom in the third row.

Key Differences: The U.S. seven-seater is a cramped addition, while the Chinese version offers usable third-row seating due to a larger vehicle size. Tesla has offered this configuration before in the U.S. and Europe, but it was discontinued quickly, raising questions about its long-term availability this time around.

Beyond the seating update, Tesla has also made subtle cosmetic changes to the Premium and Performance Model Ys:
– Dark grey 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels replace the previous silver finish.
– The interior headliner is now darker.
– Exterior badges have shifted from silver to black.
– The central touchscreen has been upgraded from 15.4 inches to 16 inches.

These updates are minor refinements, but combined with the new seating option, they offer a refreshed experience for buyers.

Tesla’s decision to bring back the seven-seat option in the U.S. suggests a continued effort to cater to larger families, though the practicality of the configuration remains limited by its compact design. The contrast with the Chinese Model Y L highlights how Tesla adapts features to suit different markets.
