The original telephone wasn’t a single box. It was a split system. Two distinct parts handled the conversation: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter did the heavy lifting. It contained three specific components. A battery. A needle. And a drumlike device that looked like a cylinder with one end covered.
The setup was mechanical until it became electrical. The covered end of the drum was attached directly to the needle. Wire ran from that needle to the battery. Another wire connected the battery to the receiver on the other end. It was a closed loop.
When Alexander Graham Bell spoke into the open end of the drum, the physics took over. His voice made the paper and needle vibrate. These vibrations weren’t just sound. They were converted into an electric current. That current traveled along the wire. It moved through the circuit to the receiver. The message arrived not as sound, but as electricity.
