They messed up again.

Sony posted a video showing off its AI Camera Assistant on the Xperia 1. It looked bad. Like, really bad.

So now the company is scrambling for damage control. They are saying the feature doesn’t “edit” photos. That’s a weird way to put it.

Here’s their spin: the AI analyzes lighting, depth, and the subject. Then it gives you four suggestions. One changes exposure. One tweaks color. One messes with background blur. Point. Shoot. Decide.

The angle thing

Sony also claims the assistant knows “the most photogenic angle.”

Did they show that in the video? Hardly. The clip only showed it zooming in. Zooming in is not finding a better angle. That’s just getting closer.

The examples on X are slightly less awful than the disaster from May 14th. The sandwich isn’t totally white. The portrait in the field isn’t blinded by sun.

But look closer.

  • Option one? Too saturated. Screaming red.
  • Option two? Flat. Overprocessed. Looks like plastic.
  • Option three? Looks Photoshoped. The food isn’t real.
  • Option four? Contrast cranked until it hurts.

Is this helpful? Barely.

The originals aren’t great either. But these “fixes” look worse.

The AI isn’t making it better. It’s making it different. And worse.

If you actually bought the Xperia 1, you should probably turn this thing off. Just shoot manually. Save the settings for later. Let the camera breathe.

Maybe next time.
