Unless you have a power bank, your smartphone is just a brick. However, you can hear the sound of a familiar sound when you take a phone with a cord, it works. Why?
This is due to two things: low voltage and separate infrastructure.
Standard analog landline telephones require very little energy to operate. It requires 6-12 volts and about 30 milliamps of current. This is hardly enough for small LEDs, let alone communication devices. Because the power consumption is very small, you can continue to use the phone network generator for a long period of time.
The telephone company supplies this power directly through the wire. A dedicated pair of copper wires run from the central office to your home. These electric wires are often buried underground to protect them from ice, wind, and debris that take out overhead power lines during severe weather. Electricity is sent to your home through this wire. If your home power goes out, your phone can still get power from the road.
Corded phones are completely dependent on this external power source. Just pick up the handset and you’re ready to go. However, wireless phones usually have a base station that can be plugged into the wall. A rotary phone is a simple wired device that works very well.
Because of this reliability, especially in areas where hurricanes or frequent power outages are prone to occur, many people continue to use landlines even today. It is fail-safe in case everything else goes dark.

Which phones work during a power outage?
Corded phones work. This includes traditional analog handsets and rotary phones. It plugs directly into a phone socket and is powered by the line. Cordless phones usually don’t work unless the base station has a backup battery. If the base station needs wall power to charge phones or process signals, the system may malfunction if the lights go out. Voice over IP (VoIP) usually does not work unless your modem and router have a UPS.
