The Real Bottleneck: Your Home WiFi
The choke point isn’t the backbone. It’s the last mile. Luke Deryckx, CTO at Ookla, sees it clearly. The infrastructure holds. The problem is end users sharing one WiFi system. Families are crowded together. Screens are everywhere.
Ookla’s data backs this up. Residential speeds slowed in early March. New York and California led the drop. Shelter-in-place orders were in effect. China and Italy saw similar dips. China is rebounding now. Its case count is dropping.
Look at the clock. Cloudflare reports a shift in U.S. traffic patterns. Peak demand used to hit around 7:30 p.m. When families settled in. Now? The peak hits around 11:00 a.m. It lasts longer. The rhythm of life has changed. We are awake and online when we used to be at work or school.

App-Specific Crashes vs. Internet Failure
Don’t confuse network failure with service failure. Your ISP might be green. The app you love might be red.
“Beyond the ISPs, there are also the service platforms that people are using,” Deryckx notes. “That’s why even though your ISP might be working just fine, Netflix or Zoom might struggle to keep up with high traffic volume.”
Companies didn’t anticipate this volume. They don’t have enough servers. They didn’t scale up fast enough. Video conferencing tools stutter. Zoom experiences intermittent sluggishness. Financial trading platforms crashed repeatedly in early March. The stock market plunged. The tools failed to keep up.
Facebook is also buckling. It faces two problems. Massive traffic surge. And 45,000 employees working remotely for the first time. That’s not a normal Tuesday for them.
Preventing Internet Overload Through Redundancy
How do we stop the crash? Not by limiting usage. That’s a blunt instrument. We need robust systems. We need new backups. Levinson argues this is the only real fix. Engineering teams are scaling up baseline infrastructure right now. They are adding capacity. They are watching the traffic patterns day by day.
Deryckx calls it an unprecedented shift in human behavior. It’s not just internet trends. It’s survival. The web is becoming essential for everyday life.
This brings a darker issue to light. The digital divide. If this lasts 18 months, access becomes a matter of life and death. Not literally. But for education and work, yes.
