Music distribution has always been a game of physical forms. The existence of MP3s, compact discs (CDs), cassette tapes, and even 33 rpm records still plagues some record stores. Next up is Sony’s mini disc. It looks a lot like a floppy disk, but smaller, just 7 centimeters or 2.75 inches by 2.75 inches. But under the plastic case there is a completely different storage logic.
The Recordable Advantage
A CD stores 74 minutes of music in virtually indestructible digital format. The catch? For a long time, you couldn’t record on them. MiniDisc’s main claim to fame is its ability to record at any time.
Think of a minidisk as a floppy disk. You can easily save and delete files. The difference? MiniDisc can store about 100 times more data. We are talking about 140 megabytes in data mode and 160 megabytes in audio mode. Compare this to 1.44 megabytes on a standard floppy disk. The scale is weird.

Pre-recorded minidiscs are basically small CDs. If you understand how optical discs work, you will understand the basic concepts. CDs store about five times more raw data than mini-discs (650 MB in data mode and 740 MB in audio mode). However, both formats hold roughly the same amount of music (about 75 minutes). Why? This is because MiniDisc uses a digital compression technology called ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding).
The ATRAC Compromise
ATRAC compresses the data about 5 to 1. This is a “lossy” compression algorithm. This means that the music changes slightly during decompression. To the average listener, this change is imperceptible. It was better than cassettes, so comparing the two was like comparing apples to oranges. But audiophiles are not impressed. The lossy nature has always tarnished the image of minidiscs among purists.
